” A baby girl… One of the most beautiful miracles in life, one of the greatest joys we can ever know, and one of the reasons why there is a little extra sunshine, laughter and happiness in your world today.” -Author Unkown
When Lisa and Dan asked me (Patience) about covering the birth of their first baby I was so honored that they would want me to document the start of their family. One can never know what to expect, we hope for everything to go the way we want and pray that in the end all are safe and healthy.
Lisa called me in the early morning hours to say she was on the way to the hospital with Dan to have their baby. Knowing she still had sometime to labor I attempted to sleep for an hour longer but was too excited, so I went to the hospital. There is no feeling like that of walking into the hospital knowing you get to meet your little one in a matter of hours. Knowing that you have waited months to see this little one and finally hold them in your arms. Who will they look like and how much hair will they have.
As I walked in I was greeted by Lisa’s mom and dad in the waiting room, preparing for what we hoped would not be a long labor. We got our wrist bands and headed back to the labor room to see how Lisa was. Dan was ready but could hardly rest.
Lisa was such a trooper through it all. With her supportive husband, and loving parents by her side she went through 13 hours of labor. In the hours when her contractions became the most productive her epidural had shifted and she began to feel the pain. Seeing the love and care in the room when Lisa was in so much pain that she couldn’t seem to bare it, made me tear up. It was beautiful to see the love of a husband when his wife is in pain and he wishes he could take it away, and a fathers love that quietly comforts and won’t leave his daughter’s side as he silently prays for her strength. The most touching of all was the love of Lisa’s mom, who is a nurse in the birthing center and has been for over 40 years. Lisa’s mom has been in those rooms so many times but this was her first time experiencing it with her own child. You could see her love overflowing for Lisa and her heart hurting to see her in such pain.
There comes a decision that has to be made when natural birth is not progressing as it should. Lisa and her family had been strong for hours with the care of the amazing nurses but at nearly 1 am with the advise of their doctor they choose to transition to a c-section. It was emotional for them and they were hoping not to do surgery but they trusted their doctor and were relieved to have an end in sight.
I was able to stay in the small waiting hall with Lisa’s parents as the c-section took place. We sat and stared in at the doors to the operating room in hopes of hearing baby girls first cry. Lisa’s mom was standing close by the wall to hear and the joy that filled her eyes when she heard her granddaughter for the first time was the best part of my time there. We could not hold the tears back as we heard little Ellie’s first cries. The moments seeing Dan come out finally holding his daughter were priceless. Capturing the grandparents and great grandparents meeting her made it perfect. Congratulations to Dan and Lisa, thank you so very much for the honor of being there for your beautiful daughters birth!
